The Victorian political rivalry between
Benjamin Disraeli

Once, coming from opposite directions,
the two met in a narrow alley.
It was clear that one of them
would have to step into the gutter
to let the other pass.
and huffed
"I never step aside for scoundrels!"
Disraeli, with a sly smile,
stepped into the gutter
and replied
"I always do."
